Secretary of Health and Human Services Extends COVID Health National Health Emergency

We want to alert clients that the Secretary of Health and Human Services (Secretary) has extended the COVID Health National Health Emergency until July 20, 2021.

Under applicable law a national health emergency determination remains in effect for 90 days or until the Secretary determines that the emergency no longer exists, whichever occurs first. If the conditions causing the national health emergency continue the Secretary can extend the determination another 90 days.

During the COVID National Health Emergency health benefits plans must, among other requirements, continue to:

  1. Extend deadlines that would normally apply to special enrollment requests, COBRA events, and benefit claims and appeals; and
  2. Cover COVID tests and immunizations at 100% in or out of network.
