This episode of Conversations with TED speaks to salient factors in 2021 that influenced the restaurant industry. In looking at stories that defined 2021, we note rebound and the ongoing adaptability of restaurants around COVID-19. Another key takeaway was the rise in M&A activity, pointing to examples of Flynn Restaurant Group, Fat Brands and RBI purchasing Firehouse Subs. Staff shortages continued to be a challenge across the board and impact service capabilities and operations. Technology’s impact on the customer experience was another change that directly impacted the restaurant interaction. Finally, we discuss the ongoing challenge of supply chain issues and the effect on restaurants having adequate onsite products (food and materials).
