How to regulate artificial intelligence (AI)? Google has spoken up to support regulation already, the EU has proposed rules already, and the US Congress has begun asking questions already. It seems the time is ripe for some rules about AI, and Microsoft is on board.
Why it Matters
Everything from art to commerce to social media can be affected (positively or not) by the use of AI. Many news reports in late May covered the story of a New York lawyer who asked AI to write a brief in support of a client's position; the AI tool made up supporting case law and holdings, and the lawyer didn't check the cites before filing. This is but one example of how AI can steer us wrong -- and that one was caused by a lazy mistake. Regulators, ethicists, and big tech are warning us that fake "information" from AI can be generated for nefarious purposes as well, and want to make sure that horse doesn't make it out of the barn.
