Mural Planned to Honor First All-Black Girl Scout Troop in Atlanta

The Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta are honoring the 80th anniversary of the first all-black Girl Scout troop in the Atlanta area. The troop started in 1944 in the famous Sweet Auburn community of Atlanta. The Girl Scouts organization plans to have a mural painted on the outside of the building where the troop met. Girl Scouts is accepting donations to fund the project and hopes the artist can start the mural this summer.

In 1944, the troop met in the Sweet Auburn community in what was known as The Atlanta Daily World Building. It was named for the Black-owned newspaper that was printed in the building. The District V Troop met upstairs. Downstairs was a jazz club where Louis Armstrong and more performed.
