Louisiana Clarifies Suspension of Statute of Limitations for Sexual Abuse Claims

The Louisiana legislature has passed a law clarifying that its previous suspension of the statute of limitations applies to claims of sexual abuse of minors. Attorneys defending civil suits had argued that the suspension only applied to some claims because of the wording of the statute. The legislature ended that controversy, and specified that any sexual abuse claim involving minors, no matter how old, can be brought until June 2024.

It is the express intent of the legislature to revive until June 14, 2024, any cause of action related to sexual abuse of a minor that previously prescribed under any Louisiana prescriptive period.
